In October, Kay Fredette, 78, was hon- ored at the annual Colorado Governor’s Tourism Conference with the 2017 Jack Snow Award for Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. She has volunteered for more than 30 years with Museums of Western Colorado. As the Volunteer Laboratory Supervisor, Fredette directs the cleaning and preparation of fossil specimens for study and exhibit—a process that can require months. She also trains new lab volunteers and helps with fossil identification, a skill that takes years to develop.
